[17]
is a reckoning with adolescence
“[17] is an attempt to encapsulate my 17th year in a physical and tangible space. It fails in many ways. Bits of the future, 18 and 19, creep in between cracks in the present. And I question the validity of my memory, and thus its representation in this space. However, [17] maintains the emotional presence of that year: the weight it holds today, looking back, and the weight it held then, looking forward. I find myself much more interested in this emotional prevalence than in parsing together an elusive factual recount of my teens. This installation has allowed me to consider frequent themes in my work, while taking on new mediums and adapting old mediums to new ways of working and considering space.”
